"SUSPENSION TRAINING" FOR DEVELOPING VERTICAL JUMPING ABILITY
Limitations:
In the case of jumping forms being regulated
- Procedure:
Twenty-one male university students (age: average}SD=22.6}2.5jwere separated into 2 groups, one for free jumping training and the other for suspension training with a load reduction rate of 10% of body weight. The subjects were asked to jump with all their might 10 repetitions with 15 second intervals in a day, 3 days a week, and for 8 weeks. When the subjects jumped, their jumping forms were made uniform by regulating that the hands be kept on the hips during the jump, and that the knee and the hip-joint angles be kept 120 degrees when they took jumping positions. Before and after the 8 week training period, vertical jumping heights in free jumping were measured.
- Results:
No significant development in jumping heights was observed in either the free jumping or the suspensio training groups (by ANOVA).
- Conclusions:
When arm action and joint angles in lower extremities are regulated, suspension training may no be sufficient to develop vertical jumping abilitiy.
In the case of non-athletes
- Procedure:
Fifty healthy non-athlete male university students (age: average}SD=20.7}1.9jwere separated into 5 groups to equalize the physical characteristics of each group. The types of training assigned to each group were:1 set (10 repetitions of jumping with 15 second intervals) of free-jumping, 3 sets (5 minute rest between the sets) of free jumping, 1 set of suspension training with a load reduction rate of 10% of body weight, 1 set of suspension training with a load reduction rate of 20% of body weight, and 3 sets of suspension training with a load reduction rate of 10% of body weight, respectively. The subjects were requested to jump with all their might, 3 days a week, for 8 weeks. Before and after the 8 week training period, vertical jumping heights of all subjects by free jumping were measured.
- Results:
After the 8 week training period ANOVA revealed that no training groups showed any significant improvement in jumping height.
- Conclusions:
Neither the free jumping nor the suspension training my be sufficient to develop vertical jumping abilities of non athletes.
